Glen Johnson today moved from Portsmouth to Liverpool, signing a four-year contract in a deal reportedly worth somewhere in the region £18.5 million, and he departs with the best wishes of Pompey chairman Peter Storrie, who feels that the player has made a superb contribution at Fratton Park since he joined the club from Chelsea in 2006 on loan.
He joined permanently a year later, and has subsequently developed a reputation as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League, with his power and pace adding a significant attacking threat to his game. He spent some time last season impressing on the right wing, as manager Paul Hart steered the club to top flight survival.
"Glen made a fantastic contribution here: he won the FA Cup with us and got his England place back. He just got better and better," Storrie told Portsmouth's official website.
"Glen’s a fantastic guy and it’s a great opportunity for him to join an outstanding club who can offer him Champions League football. We didn’t want to lose him but we couldn’t stand in his way.
"We wish him all the best for next season - apart from the two games when we play Liverpool."
Johnson played 99 games for Pompey, scoring four goals.
