Luca Toni is so desperate to return to Italy that he would be willing to take a pay cut to secure a transfer deal.
The main motivation behind Toni's desire to return to his homeland is his belief that playing for a top Serie A club will prove to Italy coach Marcello Lippi that he is not finished, despite recent poor performances for the Azzurri.
In 2006, when Toni was plying his trade for Florence-based side Fiorentina, the big striker was instrumental in Italy's World Cup success, and in order to return to that level he feels he must return to the Serie A.
Bitter rivals AC Milan and Inter Milan are said to be interested in securing Toni's services, although no contact has been made with his current club, Bayern Munich, or the player's agent.
"I would really like to return to Italy," said Toni.
"Inter? For the time being they are just rumours and no contact.
"I would be ready to reduce my salary in order to return to my country."
Whether the move is likely, or simply off-season transfer speculation will emerge in the next few days, but Toni has certainly made it clear that he has no wish to remain in the Bundesliga.
