Messi’s rise credited to Ronnie, Deco

FC Inter Milan v AC Milan - Serie A

Txiki Begiristain, technical director at the Nou Camp, has defended the sale of Ronaldinho and Deco last summer.

Begiristain said that holding on to the Blaugrana's underperforming stars would not have been a good move, citing their transfers as catalysts for Lionel Messi's meteoric rise.

"It was a necessary move because the coach had to work with a proper team and an appropriate squad," he said during an interview with Barca's official magazine.

"We thought that it would be too risky to continue with the same players and it wasn't worth the gamble."

Many wondered whether the side would be able to recover from the loss of two of their biggest names when they were sold at the end of last season, but Begiristain believes that the team's current status has been reached thanks to that brave decision.

"If Lionel Messi is number one today, it is partly because they relinquished their place and that allowed him to take over."

"Besides with the departures, we gave the dressing room a massive shake-up, we freed up space in the squad, we modified some roles and redefined a few others."

The technical director also praised Barca's coach Guardiola, but credited Barca's 4-3-3 system to certain Dutchman almost 20 years ago.
